Are Black Hat SEO Tactics Only for the Wicked?

You don’t have to don a witch’s pointed headgear to know something about black hat SEO, and perhaps you’ve thought about trying some new tactics. If traditional white hat SEO practices don’t seem to be reaping you the rewards you’re looking for, it can be a tempting idea. But it’s not necessarily a great idea.

White Hat SEO

The difference between black hat SEO and white hat SEO is pretty obvious from the names. White hat SEO tactics are the typical tools site owners use, including careful keyword usage, meta descriptions, title tags, frequently updated content, etc. Black hat SEO strategies are those that violate the terms of use that search engines establish. They tend to be aggressive techniques that focus more on artificially boosting rankings than meeting the needs of customers.

Some common black hat SEO tactics are things like keyword stuffing, hidden text, spam comments with backlinks and cloaking. The techniques used tend to evolve over time, however, as search engines change their algorithms to be more discerning. Aggressive strategies used in black hat SEO usually are the work of spammers and hackers. If a company marketing company ever offers to boost your site visits by an extremely unlikely percentage, you can be certain they are spammers who will violate the terms of search engine usage without hesitation.

Black hat SEO tactics are bad for two main reasons, even aside from violating user agreements. First of all, they don’t serve consumers. Their only aim is to boost a company’s position on a search results page, even if their business doesn’t have anything to do with what the user searched for. The spam content messages with backlinks are a nuisance to site owners and readers alike. The efforts at inflating numbers are made regardless who they inconvenience or annoy.

The other reason is that black hat SEO users are likely to get caught, and when they do they will be penalized. Search engines will refuse to list violators on results listings entirely, or at the very least demote them to a deeper page position.

Grey Hat SEO

It’s worth noting that there is a third category, so-called grey hat SEO. These are tactics that aren’t exactly violations of the terms of service, but they aren’t considered common or organic, either. In most cases, there is some type of money changing hands for paid SEO boosters, including crosslinking.
